CIRA Internet Performance Test Initiative

Tech Impact partnered with the McKenna Institute, the New Brunswick Business Council, the Conseil Economique du Nouveau-Brunswick, and the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) to launch a public engagement campaign to conduct Internet Performance Tests throughout the province and inform the provincial strategy on connecting all New Brunswickers to high-speed, affordable and reliable internet.

CIRA is a non-profit organization that manages the .CA internet domain and promotes a secure and accessible internet for all Canadians. CIRA’s internet performance test is a free online tool that allows users to measure their internet speeds and quality of service.

In New Brunswick, CIRA has been working to promote internet access, effectiveness and affordability, particularly in rural and remote areas of the province. Its Internet Performance Test initiative seeks to gather information and data on internet speed and availability throughout the province to inform New Brunswick’s internet expansion strategy. Through its community-led internet project grants, CIRA has provided funding for various projects aimed at improving internet access and digital literacy in New Brunswick communities. For example, CIRA has supported projects that provide public Wi-Fi access, promote online safety and privacy, and improve digital skills training.

CIRA partnered with leading organizations in New Brunswick to promote the Internet Performance Test through a month-long engagement campaign and support initiatives that promote digital inclusion and access to affordable internet services. The data collected from this campaign, along with concerns heard in the engagements will inform the province’s strategy to connect all New Brunswickers to high-speed internet.

Overall, CIRA’s internet performance test initiative and its work with its partners reflects our shared commitment to promoting a secure, accessible, and equitable internet for all Canadians.
